Bansko
Bansko is a main administrative and culture-historical center of Bansko municipality. It is located at 925 m altitude, 150 km southern of Sofia (2-3:30 h), 60 km south-eastern of Blagoevgrad (1:10 h) and has good transport connections with them.
Being famous as the gate to the awesome Pirin mountain the town is main start point for mountain routes all time of the year - www.pirin-np.com.
Bansko is the newest and the fastest in development Bulgarian winter ski resort. There are pistes build to match all types of visitors – form beginners to masters. They are serviced by a good network of ski-lifts and rope-lines. The pistes are safeguarded and well maintained - www.banskoski.com.
The specific atmosphere of the Bulgarian national revival period, the rich culture-historical heritage, the preserved folklore and craftworks, the authentic cuisine, the variety of cozy taverns in traditional style – all of these combined with the fabulous nature of Pirin and the warm mineral springs in the neighboring Dobrinshte and Banya makes Bansko a unique tourist center.
The town has a statue of unique settlement of international importance for the economic tourism (since 1979).
There are about 150 cultural monuments in Bansko. Some of them are of national importance:
- “St Trinity” church with the clock bell tower;
- “The Assumption” church;
- “Velyanova House” with its artistic decoration made by Velyan Ognev -one of the well known representatives of the Basko Art School;
- “Neofit Rilski” house-museum;
- “Nikola Vaptsarov” house-museum and House of Art and Poetry where you can find permanent ethnographic exhibition bazaar;
- “Bansko Iconography School” icon exhibition at the Hilendarski (Rila) Cloister.
Bansko is a birthplace of many great Bulgarians, amongst them are Paisiy Hilendarski – author of the first Bulgarian history book, Neofit Rilski - patriarch of the new Bulgarian education and enlightenment, Nikola Vaptsarov – world acknowledged poet-anti-fascist, the only Bulgarian having the International Peace Prize, Toma Vishanov-Molera – the founder of the Bansko Art School.
The most significant cultural event are the Bansko Tradition Holidays that are celebrated for a week in May every year.
A traditional holiday in Bansko is the summer jazz festival that gather popular singers from Bulgaria and abroad - www.banskojazz.com.
Bansko is not just a beautiful small town, which you visit, Bansko is different from all other towns that you have ever seen. There is no other place with such gates and walls of round stones, no such men’s songs and women’s sleeveless dresses. There is no other place where you can hear such melodious speech, where you can taste more delicious meals than here. And the mature wine in Bansko is elixir for the soul.
